Exercise details.

Ukrainian maritime drones used in the war against Russia demonstrated high efficiency during NATO's REPMUS/Dynamic Messenger 2025 exercise off the coast of Portugal. During the maneuvers, they helped identify vulnerabilities of the alliance's naval forces and conditionally "sink" one of the frigates.

This was reported by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung with reference to a source among the participants of the exercises.

The source said that within the framework of the maneuvers, a multinational group was formed, which played the role of a conventional enemy. Its actions were coordinated by Ukraine. The group included units from the United States, Britain, Spain and other countries. The task was to simulate modern maritime warfare, including the defense of ports and convoys, as well as attacks on maritime communications.

In all five scenarios of the exercises, the "red" team, representing the notional enemy, defeated the "blue" forces. The Ukrainian side used Magura V7 marine drones - small uncrewed boats capable of ramming ships or using weapons mounted on them.

Ukraine presented several variants of this drone. One was equipped with reconnaissance equipment and an explosive charge, another with a machine gun. In addition, other participants of the exercise also used their own models of unmanned boats.

According to the rules of maneuvers, real attacks on ships were not carried out. To record a "hit" it was enough to detect the target and conditionally strike before the ship's crew. For example, if the drone managed to "point" at the ship's radar before the crew noticed it, it was considered that the ship was hit.

In one of the simulations of an attack on a maritime convoy, the number of conditional strikes on the frigate was so high that, according to the participants, in a real battle the ship could have sunk. According to the source, the frigate's crew did not even notice the drones approaching.

A few minutes after the conditional attack, representatives of the "blue" forces wrote a question in the general chat room asking whether the enemy was going to attack at all.
