Lavrov Says Plans To Continue War Against Ukraine
Sergey Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister accuses Ukraine of disrupting peace talks.

The Kremlin, through the mouth of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, has once again accused Kiev of "sabotaging" peace talks and vowed to continue the war. "These agreements [on a diplomatic settlement of the war in Ukraine], to which Russia was committed from 2022 up to the year of this year, they are being sabotaged by the Ukrainian side," TASS quoted the minister, who was answering reporters' questions on Monday after a meeting with Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi.

Lavrov said Russia was not going to stop military operations due to Ukraine's "unpreparedness" for peace. "President [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has repeatedly confirmed that we are unequivocally committed to a negotiated solution. But since the Kiev regime is not ready for it, we will achieve the goals of a special military operation on the ground, which is what is happening now," he said. According to the foreign minister, "unlike the Europeans," the United States is "promoting" the idea of "recognizing the realities 'on the ground'" and handing over all of Donbass to Russia in order to eliminate "the root causes of the conflict." Lavrov called "the presence of a Nazi regime in Kiev" another such "root cause."

"The Europeans definitely want to keep it on whatever territory is left of Ukraine, and this regime will continue its hostile anti-Russian activities. Some kind of stabilization forces are going to be brought into its territory - these will be essentially occupation troops that will pose a threat to Russia," the minister said.

In late February, Bloomberg, citing sources, wrote that Russian negotiators after the U.S.-Russia-Ukraine meetings in Geneva told U.S. officials that Moscow would withdraw from the discussions if it refused to make concessions. They demanded that all of Donbass be given to Russia, which could be followed by a meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian presidents to confirm a peace agreement. Also, according to the interlocutors, Moscow said it was ready, as part of the agreement, to withdraw troops from captured areas in Sumy, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions and to stop seizures in other regions.

The negotiation process was due to continue on March 4-5, but it was prevented by the start of a US and Israeli military operation against Iran.
