The EU should take this into account when building its own capacity and security.
This was stated by European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius at the Forum Europa event "Ideas for Strengthening the Union" in Brussels, "Ukrinform" reports.
The EU does not exclude the risk of direct aggression of Russia against the countries of the Union.
"While developing our independence and European power, we need to understand: there is no peace on the horizon in Russia's war against Ukraine," Kubilius said, noting the "real possibility" that the EU itself will face Russian aggression.
He also mentioned the shortage of missile defense supplies to Ukraine, the Gulf states and Europe, and recalled the words of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that Europe needs to "increase its air defense capabilities by 400%."
Talking about Ukraine's role in European security, Kubilius stressed: "Ukraine has been protecting us for more than four years of a terrible war..... Only Ukraine's strength is the way to a just peace. Such a peace will come if Ukraine begins to defeat Russia."
In this context, he repeated his previous call for increased support for Ukraine, stressing that a Russian victory would cost Europe twice as much.
"Investment in defense is always expensive, but lack of investment is always much more expensive. And we need Ukraine for our defense. If Russia attacks us, EU member states will face a battle-tested Russian army, much stronger than in 2022, capable of using nearly 10 million drones. No NATO member state in Europe has such battle-tested experience - only the Armed Forces of Ukraine," the European Commissioner stressed.
Kubilius said that the integration of Ukraine's defense industrial capabilities into the European defense industry is in the vital interests of Europe. He stressed that this could be done faster by taking the initiative to establish the European Defense Union.
"This could be a good step for Ukraine on its way to full EU membership in the near future," the European commissioner said.
