The U.S. could deliver an "economic knockout" to Tehran.
US President Donald Trump is considering seizing Iran's Kharq Island, through which about 90% of the country's oil exports pass, Axios sources among US officials said.
The decision to seize the island could be made if the blockade of oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz continues, they said. One of the interlocutors said Trump was attracted to the idea because of the possibility of delivering an "economic knockout to the regime" in Tehran by depriving it of funding.
A ground operation would be required to seize the island, and the Iranian military could respond with strikes on Gulf oil facilities and pipelines, including Saudi Arabia. "There are big risks and big rewards. The president has not yet made a decision and it is unclear whether he will make one," the source said. He added that Trump "does not intend to just wait and let the Iranians set the pace of the conflict." Another interlocutor emphasized that as long as the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is in place and exports are restricted, Trump "won't be able to end the war even if he wanted to."
