ABC: Maduro Screams The Same Phrase At Night
Nicolás Maduro

The dictator in his cell mourns the loss of power.

Former Venezuelan ruler Nicolas Maduro has been held for the past month in the New York Detention Center (MDC) after being arrested by US special forces while awaiting trial on drug terrorism charges. According to Spanish newspaper ABC, Maduro is being held in a solitary cell three meters long and two meters wide.

At night, he often screams, reminding guards that he is still president of Venezuela, that he has been kidnapped and is demanding his freedom.

The cell itself, with a small, narrow window that lets in little light, has a metal bunk bed (bunk beds) attached to the wall, a toilet and a sink. Maduro is allowed outside, but only three times a week in a small fenced-in yard. He is handcuffed and accompanied by two guards the entire time he walks.

According to ABC television, Maduro has been placed in solitary confinement for several purposes: disciplinary isolation, suicide prevention, and protection of high-ranking or at-risk prisoners.

There is no official record of his nightly screams, but the guards themselves at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn (MDC) talk about them constantly, where Maduro has been held since January 3. "I am the president of Venezuela! Tell my country that I've been kidnapped!" the ABC news outlet quoted the former head of the Venezuelan regime as saying on a regular basis.

Maduro faces serious charges of narco-terrorism and smuggling cocaine into the United States. Despite the prisoner's compelling appeals, the U.S. justice system is in no hurry. According to ABC reporters, preparation for trial could take months to years, which Maduro could spend in solitary confinement in New York.
