A Russian tanker Arctic Metagaz with diesel fuel and liquefied gas is drifting in the Mediterranean Sea, which was earlier attacked by marine drones. The vessel is out of control as it no longer has a crew on board, Italian publication Il Fatto Quotidiano writes.
The tanker Arctic Metagaz was carrying about 900 tons of diesel fuel and liquefied gas, according to Italian journalists. It was attacked a few days ago by marine drones in the Mediterranean Sea near the Libyan coast. The crew then abandoned the tanker and it began drifting.
The Arctic Metagaz is now drifting in the Strait of Sicily towards Malta. It is tilted about 30 degrees as it sustained severe damage from an attack by marine drones.

Italian authorities are concerned that the tanker of the Russian "shadow fleet" may sink, leading to an environmental disaster.
To prevent such a development, the tanker Arctic Metagaz is being escorted by an Italian military vessel. If necessary, they plan to bring in a ship to clean up the polluted water.
The fact that the situation with the ghost tanker is really very serious is evidenced by the fact that a meeting was recently held with the participation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni.
The situation is also being monitored by Malta, as it is to this island that the Arctic Metagaz is drifting.
Reminder, the Russian "shadow fleet" tanker Arctic Metagaz, which was carrying sanctioned gas, caught fire on the morning of March 3, 2026 in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya.
Russia claims that it was attacked by Ukrainian crewless boats. The Russian Transport Ministry said there were 30 sailors aboard the ship, all of whom were rescued, with no injuries.
