Reuters Has Revealed Banksy's Real Name

It was possible to identify the artist back in 2008.

The real name of the street artist, who hides his identity under the pseudonym Banksy, is David Jones, so concluded journalists Reuters after an investigation.

The agency notes that it was possible to establish the identity of the artist back in 2008. Then the Mail on Sunday newspaper identified him as Robin Gunningham, a native of Bristol. However, the artist has since changed his documents and now his passport shows the name David Jones, one of the most popular names in the UK.

In preparing the investigation, journalists interviewed more than a dozen insiders and experts from Banksy's entourage, but none of them would reveal his identity. Find out the new name, according to the Reuters publication, it was possible after studying the documents presented in the public domain. It, in particular, is found in the accounts kept by Banksy's former accountant. The agency does not publish the documents itself, "to reduce the likelihood of disclosure of the address and some other confidential information".

The journalists note that they realize the importance of anonymity for Banksy's work. However, they believe the artist is too influential, so revealing his identity is of high public importance. "People and organizations that want to shape social and political discourse are subject to scrutiny, accountability, and sometimes exposure," the piece says.
