To ensure the stability of the world's oil supply.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the U.S. Navy will escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz to ensure the stability of the world's oil supply.
Bessent said in an interview with Sky News:
"I'm confident that as soon as it becomes militarily feasible, the U.S. Navy, perhaps as part of an international coalition, will escort ships through the strait."
The minister said Iranian and Chinese tankers continue to pass through the strait, indicating that there is no mines.
At the time of the interview, the minister was urgently summoned to the White House Situation Room for a meeting with President Donald Trump. After the two-hour meeting, Bessent did not deny that the topic of discussion was specifically the introduction of military escorts for civilian ships.
Iran's bombardment of shipping and energy infrastructure has already pushed oil prices above $100 a barrel. The price spike came despite a decision by more than 30 countries to release 400 million barrels of oil from their strategic reserves.
What preceded
On Thursday, March 12, Iran's new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei announced plans to use the closure of the Strait of Hormuz as leverage against the United States and Israel.
U.S. President Donald Trump earlier ordered financial guarantees for maritime trade in the Persian Gulf and allowed the involvement of the military fleet to protect tankers.
At the same time, amid the energy crisis, Washington for 30 days allowed other countries to buy Russian oil already loaded on tankers and at sea.
