Its value is estimated at around €3.5 billion.
The decision to develop an anti-UAV system came after an incident last September, when some 20 Russian drones violated the country's airspace. The issue also gained new urgency after Iranian Shahed drones attacked a British military base in Cyprus last week - this happened after the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, writes Financial Times.
The Polish system, dubbed San, is being developed by a Polish-Norwegian consortium, and its cost is estimated at about 3.5 billion euros. The project is planned to be financed by European Union loans, which Poland will receive under the new Safe defense program, aimed at increasing arms production in Europe to deter Russian aggression.
Preliminary plans indicate that the San system will consist of 18 mobile anti-drone batteries. Each of them will be equipped with detection sensors and defeat means, united by a single control system.
Radars and guns mounted on hundreds of mobile platforms will patrol the Polish border and work in cooperation with national and allied air defense systems.
