Budapest has hinted it may resort to more kidnappings.
Hungary has said that the seizure of Ukrainian cash collectors and theft of money is a response to Ukraine's alleged "blocking" of the work of the Druzhba oil pipeline. Budapest also does not rule out similar actions in the future.
Hungarian Minister of Construction and Transportation Janos Lazar said this, according to Telex.
Lazar said the stolen money and gold will remain in Hungary until the transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline is restored.
The Hungarian minister also admitted that the operation to seize Oschadbank's collection vehicles was not random.
"We know that Ukrainians are very nervous. If we are being blackmailed, we can't be stupid enough to give in. We did what we did for a reason, and we will not return the money to them," he said.
In addition, Lazar hinted that Budapest may continue to steal Ukrainian money if the Druzhba issue remains unresolved.
"The money remains here for now, we are waiting for the oil pipeline to open and we are waiting for new deliveries of Ukrainian money through Hungary," the Hungarian minister said.
He also questioned the legality of transporting foreign currency to Ukraine. Lazar said that the longer it takes to restore the oil pipeline, the "more thoroughly we should investigate" the case.
