It will be ready for testing in 2028.
The United States is five years ahead of schedule for the creation of a lightweight model of the Abrams M1E3 tank. This was reported by Fox News.
"You'll never guess which program is moving the fastest: it's the U.S. Army's new M1E3 Abrams tank. Imagine this: development of the M1E3 Abrams is five years ahead of schedule. Yes, five years. And it's a hybrid model," the piece said.
While the Golden Dome missile defense projects, battleship design development and other programs are in the design phase, the Army has accelerated development of the M1E3 Abrams tank to a wartime-appropriate level, the TV station noted.
The credit goes to Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George and Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll, it said. It's part of their efforts to speed up important programs such as the MB-75 amphibious convertible. As for the tank, the Army has been studying modernization options and has been following the war in Ukraine.
The M1E3 prototype was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January. The first platoon of the new combat vehicles will be ready for testing by the military in 2028, Fox News added.
