France has begun a three-month exercise "Orion-26", in which more than 12,000 soldiers will practice the defense of a fictional ally state. This is reported by French television channel CNews.
The exercise will run from February 8 to April 30. Military forces from 24 other countries, including European states, the United States and Canada, are expected to join the exercise.
The exercise will involve 1,200 drones, 140 airplanes and helicopters, and 25 ships, including the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. Twelve French ministries will join the exercise.
In the course of the maneuvers, the armed forces intend to test developments in unmanned aerial vehicles, satellite jamming and electronic warfare.
According to Vice Admiral Xavier de Vericourt, who is in charge of organizing the exercise at the French Army General Staff, the exercise is "particularly complex." He said they will show "France's ability to be the first to enter the theater of war and lead an international coalition." De Vericourt stressed that the exercise is characterized by a high level of realism, allowing to reproduce all phases of the conflict.
According to the legend of the exercise, France has been asked for help by the fictional allied state of Arlande, which is fighting its fictional eastern neighbor Mercury. The first phase will run from Feb. 8 to March 1. The second phase of the French-led coalition exercise will take place in Champagne from April 7 to April 30. According to de Vericourt, there they will turn into "an operation integrated into the NATO command system." He noted that the exercise design is "inspired" by a scenario developed by the alliance.
