Russian Defense Ministry's Deputy GRU Chief Shot In Moscow
Vladimir Alexeev

Vladimir Alekseev was hospitalized.

An assassination attempt has been made in Moscow on Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseev, first deputy chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (military intelligence, known as GRU). This was reported by the Investigative Committee. The general was allegedly wounded and hospitalized, Radio Liberty reported.

According to the report, an unidentified man opened fire on the military officer in an apartment building on Volokolamskoye highway in northwestern Moscow. The unidentified man shot him several times in the back.

Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseev, 64, has been the first deputy head of the General Staff's Main Directorate - a military intelligence body - since 2011.

In 2017, Alekseev led military intelligence in Syria and was later promoted to the rank of Hero of Russia.

At the time of Prigozhin's mutiny in June 2023, Alekseev addressed the PMC Wagner fighters and called the march on Moscow "lunacy." He also took part in negotiations between Evgeny Prigozhin and Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov at the headquarters of the Southern Military District in Rostov-on-Don.

Alekseyev was born in Ukraine - in the village of Golodki in the Vinnitsa region. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate accuses him of intelligence support for aggression against Ukraine and preparing data for strikes on Ukrainian territory, including civilian targets.

As a result of assassination attempts in Russia in recent years, several high-ranking military officers have been killed, but usually the attacks involved explosions rather than gunfire.
