On the consequences for disrupting negotiations with Ukraine.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that Washington's decision to impose new sanctions against Russia will depend on the progress of peace talks on Ukraine. "We'll see where the peace talks lead," Bessent said, adding that further restrictive measures could, among other things, affect ships linked to the transportation of Russian oil. He emphasized that the recent sanctions against Russia's oil sector have contributed to Moscow's participation in the negotiation process.
The US presidential spokesman Steve Whitkoff, for his part, said that the talks in Abu Dhabi with the participation of the US, Russian and Ukrainian delegations were "constructive." According to him, the sides discussed the suspension of hostilities and the monitoring mechanism, agreeing to continue the dialog in the coming weeks. Whitkoff also noted that reopening the communication channel between the US and Russian militaries, which was closed in 2021, is crucial to achieving peace. From Washington's side, the dialogue will be led by General Alexus Grinkiewicz, commander of the U.S. European Command, the U.S. president's special envoy said.
As Bloomberg reported on February 4, citing knowledgeable European officials, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has prepared a new package of sanctions against Moscow in case the Ukraine talks fail. At the same time, skepticism is growing in Europe about the success of these consultations, as Russia, as indicated by the agency's interlocutors, has failed to achieve results on the battlefield and is trying to force the Ukrainian side to a deal with energy strikes.
