The idea was rejected.
U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed renaming a key transportation facility in New York City - Penn Station and Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. - in his honor.
According to CNN.
Sources say Trump approached Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer last month about renewing funding for the Gateway project, which totals more than $16 billion.
The program would build a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River, connecting New York and New Jersey and upgrading the infrastructure of one of the busiest transportation arteries in the United States.
One of Trump's conditions for renewing funding for the project, however, was to rename a train station in New York City and an airport in Washington, D.C., in his honor. Schumer rejected this proposal, explaining that he did not have the authority to implement such a requirement.
It should be noted that the freezing of funds for Gateway has already sparked a legal conflict: the states of New York and New Jersey have sued the Trump administration, arguing that blocking the funding is illegal.
As CNN writes, the renaming initiative has sparked widespread backlash among lawmakers and the public, although the White House has not officially commented on the information.
Renaming major public facilities after sitting politicians is an atypical practice in the United States and requires broad support at the congressional and local government levels. Skeptics have already suggested that even with the support of individual lawmakers, such an initiative is unlikely to garner enough votes to pass.
