What does it mean?
US President Donald Trump is pushing Congress to pass a new "Saving America Act" that would impose stricter requirements for voter registration and voting rights.
The White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt made the announcement.
Levitt said Trump's initiative aims to strengthen protections for the integrity of the electoral process by establishing mandatory identification for voting and providing proof of citizenship for voter registration. The spokeswoman emphasized that she believes such measures are supported by a significant portion of the US population.
Trump also repeated on his Truth Social network the baseless claim that the US election was "rigged," calling it "stolen" and a "laughingstock around the world."
The US president's initiative comes amid controversy over the electoral process in the States, where Trump and his supporters have repeatedly advocated for the "nationalization" of elections and stricter voting rules.
Part of Republicans have already pushed bills that would require proof of citizenship for registration and strict voter identification, which has drawn criticism from Democrats and civil rights activists who see it as a threat to voting rights.
Critics also note that federal interference in an electoral process that constitutionally belongs to the states could lead to constitutional disputes and exacerbate political tensions.
