A fire broke out on board after the explosion.

In the waters of the Gulf of Finland on the approach to St. Petersburg there was an explosion on the container ship MSC Giada III with 22 crew members on board, which was on its way to the city from Belgian Antwerp. This was reported by the telegram channel MNS with reference to its source.

The explosion in the engine compartment of the ship, which sails under the flag of Liberia, was heard when it was in the Neva Bay. A fire then broke out and flames engulfed the deck superstructure. According to the Starboard Maritime Intelligence service, cited by The Insider, the last signal about the location of the container ship came about 19:30 on February 4, after which it disappeared from radar. In the morning of February 5, the ship appeared in the port of St. Petersburg.

The fire on board was extinguished for several hours - to help the victims from the port of St. Petersburg arrived rescue ship "Spasatel Karev" and icebreaker "Semyon Dezhnev". The container ship was towed to the port of St. Petersburg. No damage to the hull of the MSC Giada III and no fuel spillage was recorded. The captain of the ship is a citizen of the Russian Federation, the other crew members are citizens of Myanmar, no one was injured, writes MNS. Law enforcers are investigating the cause of the explosion.

According to ship tracking data, on January 21, the container ship left the port of Agadir (Morocco), then headed for Belgium. On January 31, he took a course for St. Petersburg. The owner of the ship - Liberian Sky Limits Shipping & Trading, and its operator - Msc Mediterranean Shipping Co (registered in Switzerland). The Russian authorities have not yet made any official comments on the incident.
