The dictator favored the re-election of 80-year-old Lula da Silva.
Dictator Alexander Lukashenko is "very worried" about the incumbent head of state Luis Inácio Lula da Silva winning the presidential election in Brazil. He said this in a meeting with Brazilian Ambassador Bernard Klingle on February 2.
- Brazil is going through an important political moment. As far as I am informed, you will have general elections this year. You will be electing everyone you can. Frankly, I don't envy you in this, because it's a difficult period. But we are very anxious that the current President of Brazil will retain his position in this election. As far as I am informed, he has confirmed his participation in these elections," Lukashenko said.
He promised to "contribute in every possible way to the elections to be held in a calm and peaceful environment in the interests of the Brazilian people, if necessary for Brazil."
The politician also urged to approach the building of Belarusian-Brazilian relations "more intensively and not to complicate them."
- Simple. The basis is the economy. Therefore, it is necessary to choose those areas of cooperation in the economy that are interesting for Brazil. On the other hand, they are interesting for Belarus. We can do it," he said.
Lukashenko noted that among "a large number of mutually beneficial issues" between the two countries, some "have not found their resolution."
- And if they are mutually beneficial (as you see, time is changing very quickly), we need to take these issues seriously and decide whether we will move in this direction," he urged.
80-year-old Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva previously led Brazil - from 2003 to 2010 - and was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison in 2017 for money laundering and corruption. The sentence was later increased to 12 years. He himself never admitted his guilt, his lawyers eventually managed to appeal the sentence. In 2021, the country's Supreme Court annulled his conviction in anti-corruption cases, which allowed him to run for election again and win in 2022.
Reminder that Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is in tense relations with Donald Trump. The American president has repeatedly criticized Lula and supported his opponents.
