Germany intends to nominate current Bundeswehr inspector general Karsten Broer for the post of chairman of the NATO Military Committee.
The country's defense minister Boris Pistorius said this before the start of the NATO meeting, writes Handelsblatt.
The position of chairman of the NATO Military Committee is currently held by Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone. His successor will be chosen in September at the committee's meeting in Copenhagen. The chosen candidate will take office in the summer of 2027.
German Defense Minister announced that a representative of the Bundeswehr will be a contender for the post.
"I am very pleased that we, as the Federal Republic of Germany, have an excellent candidate for this committee in the person of Inspector General Carsten Broer. General Broer has made a name for himself with his analytical skills and gift of foresight, especially regarding the threatening situation in Europe," Pistorius said.
The head of the Military Committee, along with the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO's Combined Armed Forces in Europe (SACEUR), is considered the most influential military figure in the Alliance. He is the principal military advisor to the Secretary General and the link through which the recommendations of the Chiefs of Staff of all NATO member states are fed to the political decision-making bodies. In addition, instructions and directives from SACEUR and the Director General of the International Military Staff are transmitted through him.
