According to eyewitnesses, explosions erupted in the settlement at around 1:30 a.m., and detonation began some time later. A huge column of fire appeared above the GRAU warehouse, which was observed from a distance of several kilometers.
Russians also complained that the detonation caused glass to fall and walls to shake. According to preliminary reports, in addition to UAVs, missile weapons were used to attack the enemy warehouse.
The governor of the Volgograd region, Andrey Bocharov, has issued that Russian Defense Ministry air defense units allegedly repelled a missile attack, and that the fire and detonation at the ammunition depot occurred "as a result of falling debris."
The official also said that in order to ensure the safety of the civilian population from the threat of detonation during the firefighting, the evacuation of the Kotluban settlement has been announced and is underway.The evacuated Russians will be settled in the house of culture and Children's and Youth Sports School.
Although the Russian authorities do not disclose at which exact Defense Ministry facility the consequences of the missile strike were recorded, OSINT-channels suggest that it could be GRAU - the Main Rocket and Artillery Directorate of the Russian Defense Ministry. What is known about the GRAU warehouse
The GRAU arsenal in the village of Kotluban, Volgograd region, is one of the key logistical hubs of the Russian Defense Ministry. This facility belongs to the Main Rocket and Artillery Directorate (GRAU) and serves as an important base for storage, maintenance and modernization of ammunition.
The area of the facility is about 3.5 square kilometers. The design capacity of the arsenal, according to various estimates, can reach 264 thousand tons of ammunition. Artillery shells, missiles for MLRS (Grad, Smerch, Uragan) and, according to Ukrainian intelligence, operational-tactical missiles are stored on the territory.
The facility has railroad access roads, which makes it possible to promptly receive and send large batches of weapons in echelons. The Kotlubani warehouse plays a strategic role in supplying the Russian occupation army. The arsenal is located about 300-450 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, making it a convenient "hub" for transshipment of cargo, which is then delivered closer to the front line.
