The Commander-in-Chief of the Army explained why this is quite possible.
Norway does not rule out the scenario of Russia invading and seizing part of its territory. This may be necessary for Moscow to protect its nuclear assets in the Far North.
The commander-in-chief of the Norwegian Armed Forces, General Eirik Kristoffersen, said this, The Guardian reported.
"We don't rule out Russia seizing territory as part of their plan to defend their own nuclear capability, which is the only thing they have left that actually threatens the United States," Kristoffersen said.
He said Russia does not have conquest goals for Norway in the same sense as it did for Ukraine or other former Soviet territories.
The general emphasized that a significant part of Russia's nuclear arsenal is concentrated on the Kola Peninsula - near the Norwegian border. This includes nuclear submarines, land-based missile systems and aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
Kristoffersen says it is these forces that would be crucial in the event of a Russian conflict with NATO in another region.
"We're not taking this off the table because there is still an option for Russia to do this to make sure that their nuclear capabilities, their second-strike capabilities, are protected. That's kind of the scenario in the far north that we're planning for," the commander-in-chief added.
