Silicon Valley's wealthy are investing in cell reprogramming technologies.

Silicon Valley billionaires, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, PayPal and Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, are investing in startups developing cell reprogramming technologies. The method is designed to restore cells to a younger state and combat age-related diseases. This is reported by Business Insider.

Among the companies conducting research in this area are Altos Labs, backed by Bezos; Retro Biosciences, backed by Altman; and New Limit, which raised $435 million in a funding round led by the Founders Fund, founded by Thiel. The latter plans to begin human trials of a therapy to reprogram liver cells in 2027.

Until recently, cell reprogramming had only been tested on animals. Life Biosciences was the first to begin human trials, using an experimental therapy to treat glaucoma—a disease that can lead to vision loss.

The company recently reported initial data on the procedure’s safety. Three patients underwent the therapy, which involves an injection into the eye and an eight-week course of daily antibiotics that activate cell rejuvenation factors. According to Life Biosciences, there were no serious side effects. Examinations revealed significant improvements in vision in two of the three participants.

Glaucoma specialist James Tsai called the results promising but emphasized that it is too early to draw conclusions: it is not yet known whether the therapy succeeded in restoring eye tissue or merely improved the transmission of electrical signals.

According to The Wall Street Journal, more than $5 billion has been invested in the longevity industry over the past 25 years. Investors are interested in technologies capable of slowing or reversing aging, treating age-related diseases, and extending life. The average investment in such companies has grown by more than 20% over the past decade, reaching nearly $43 million in 2025.

For example, Thiel has invested about $700 million in dozens of startups focused on extending life, Altman has invested $180 million in Retro Biosciences, and Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is one of the founders of New Limit.
