Sandu: Moldova Will Take In As Many Ukrainians As Necessary To Ensure Their Safety This Winter
Maia Sandu

The country continues to support Ukraine and remains a reliable partner.

Moldova is ready to accept any number of Ukrainian refugees this winter to ensure their safety. The country continues to support Ukraine and remains a reliable partner.

This was stated by Moldovan President Maia Sandu during her speech at the Moldova Security Forum, reports the official website of the President of Moldova.

According to Maia Sandu, more than one million Ukrainian citizens have arrived in Moldova since the start of the full-scale invasion, of whom about 100,000 have found a home in the country.

The government is preparing to continue providing shelter if the winter proves to be difficult.

“If this winter in Ukraine turns out to be as harsh as everyone expects, we are ready to take in as many people as necessary to ensure their safety,” the President of Moldova emphasized.

In addition to assisting refugees, Moldova is actively supporting Ukraine’s logistics and economic stability.

In particular, Chisinau has made its rail and road networks available for Ukrainian exports following the blockade of the Black Sea, ensures gas transit through its territory via the “Vertical Corridor,” and has reduced transit fees for both grain and fuel.

The president emphasized that Moldova’s security is directly linked to Ukraine’s security. Currently, Chisinau is facing an increase in hybrid threats and regular violations of its airspace.

In the past week alone, there were 9 border violations by Russian drones, and in September, the number exceeded 20.

Drone debris has already caused casualties at border checkpoints, and strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure have damaged Moldova’s water supply and power grids.

At the same time, Russia is waging cognitive warfare through anonymous Telegram channels. It is attempting to intimidate citizens, portray aid to Ukraine as dangerous, and undermine trust in state institutions.

Moldova remains part of the “Coalition of the Willing” and supports the establishment of a Special Tribunal to investigate Russia’s crime of aggression.

The country’s government is strictly ensuring that its territory is not used to circumvent international sanctions against Russia.

Sandu emphasized that Moldova’s membership in the European Union is the strongest guarantee of security for the region, and that Ukraine’s stability is a key guarantee of peace across the entire continent.

As a reminder, Moldovan President Maia Sandu previously explained why it is in her country’s interest to assist Ukraine with grain transit.

According to her, Chisinau cannot remain on the sidelines of this issue, as a shortage of funds for Ukraine’s defense would create direct security challenges for Moldova itself.

In addition, Sandu noted that the Kremlin has so far shown no interest in peace and called on international partners to increase economic pressure on Russia to end the war.
