A Psychologist Explained How To Discover Your Hidden Talents

Ask yourself five questions.

To discover your unique strengths, you need to understand not only what you’re good at, but also what you’re willing to devote your time and energy to when most people would rather back down. Psychologist Alice Boyce has proposed a five-question method that helps identify these qualities and apply them in work and everyday life, writes Psychology Today.

Here are the five questions the psychologist suggests asking yourself:

1. What am I willing to do that 50% of people aren’t willing to do?

2. What am I willing to do if 70% of people refuse to do it?

3. What am I willing to do, even though 90% of people wouldn’t want to do it?

4. In what ways am I willing to go further than 95% of those around me?

5. What am I willing to do, even if 99% of people would prefer not to?

The answers may reveal unexpected qualities: for example, a willingness to work long hours under conditions of uncertainty, to navigate bureaucracy, or to seek out your own solutions instead of resorting to the usual compromises.

“Our strengths often lie in what we’re willing to do, not just in what we’re capable of,” writes the psychologist.

At the same time, a rare trait can be both helpful and hindering. The desire to do everything your own way, for example, sometimes leads to original solutions, and sometimes wastes time. That’s why Boyce advises against rushing to conclusions and suggests observing your own behavior for a few months.
