US Military Seized The Russian Tanker Marinera

This was announced by the U.S. Armed Forces Europe Command.

The tanker Bella 1, which left Venezuela, changed its name to Marinera and changed its flag to Russian, was detained in the North Sea, the U.S. Armed Forces Europe Command announced.

The vessel, which U.S. ships had been pursuing for about two weeks, was taken under control for violating sanctions under a warrant issued by a U.S. federal court, the command said in a release.

The operation was carried out with the support of the US Department of War in line with President Donald Trump's demand for action against sanctions-violating tankers that threaten the security of the Western Hemisphere, US EU COM emphasizes.

Moscow had earlier asked the US to stop pursuing the tanker and, according to The Wall Street Journal, sent a submarine to the Atlantic to escort it. Russian warships were alongside the vessel at the time of the detention. However, no action appears to have been taken.

Also, according to the Financial Times, U.S. Air Force (Air Force) Pilatus U-28 Draco and Royal Air Force (RAF) Poseidon MRA1 aircraft, which can be used for anti-submarine warfare and surveillance, have headed to the site.

CBS News has previously reported that the U.S. decided to board the tanker rather than sink it. In a similar fashion, the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Special Operations Forces seized the tanker The Skipper, which was traveling from Venezuela under the flag of Guyana, in December.
