Countries that supply oil are threatened with duties.
US President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency. The signed executive order will allow Washington to impose duties against countries that sell or supply oil to Cuba.
According to the White House website.
In his executive order, Trump emphasized that he has a primary responsibility to protect U.S. national security and foreign policy. Cuba, on the other hand, is a threat to the United States.
"I believe that the policies, practices, and actions of the Government of Cuba pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States, the source of which is wholly or substantially outside the United States," the U.S. president said.
He emphasized that the regime maintains ties with many hostile countries, transnational terrorist groups, and malicious actors opposed to the United States. And we're talking about the government of Russia, China, Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah, among others.
Trump added that Cuba openly provides safe haven to dangerous U.S. adversaries, inviting them to host "sophisticated military and intelligence facilities that directly threaten" the national security of the United States.
"Cuba hosts the largest Russian electronic intelligence facility that attempts to steal classified information that poses a national threat to the United States. Cuba continues to develop deep intelligence and defense cooperation with the PRC. Cuba welcomes transnational terrorist groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas, creating a safe environment for these malignant groups," the executive order reads.
Trump added that because of Cuba's threat to U.S. national security, he believes a tariff system should be established against countries that help the island with oil.
"Beginning on the effective date of this order, an additional ad valorem rate of duty may be imposed on goods imported into the United States that are products of any other country that directly or indirectly sells or otherwise supplies oil to Cuba in accordance with subsections (b) and (c) of this section," the document said.
With the success in kidnapping Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, US President Donald Trump has partially shifted his attention to Cuba.
