Argentina Records Largest Energy Surplus In 33 Years

In 2025, exports exceeded imports by $7.8 billion.

Argentina has recorded the largest annual surplus in energy trade for at least 33 years. This is reported by Bloomberg, citing the country's Energy Ministry.

In 2025, exports exceeded imports by $7.8 billion. It was a record year for both the surplus and exports.

Official data kept since 1992 are tracked by Empiria, a Buenos Aires-based consulting firm.

The record surplus comes amid soaring oil and gas production in the Vaca Muerta shale basin, one of the world's three largest shale formations.

The revenue from shale production, the agency notes, is key to President Javier Miley's efforts to address Argentina's chronic economic crises.

His deregulation policies have attracted investment, notably in the past few weeks from US shale tycoon Harold Gemm.

Harold Gemm is a billionaire and one of the pioneers of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in the US, founder and owner of Continental Resources, one of the largest US independent oil producers.
