Intelligence Online: The KGB Of Belarus Is Actually A Contractor For The FSB Of The Russian Federation

The Belarusian KGB, according to the French publication Intelligence Online (translated by Belsat), plays a significant role in Moscow's hybrid operations against Ukraine and the European Union. According to the publication, Minsk actually acts as a contractor for the FSB to recruit Ukrainian citizens for subversive activities.

In a piece by Intelligence Online, to which Reform.news drew attention, it is noted that the Ukrainian and Western intelligence services are monitoring the activity of the Belarusian KGB against the background of the growing number of covert operations and sabotage, conducted by the Russian intelligence services in Europe. According to the French publication's sources, several intelligence services interviewed by journalists say that the structure headed by Ivan Tertel is increasingly being used by Moscow to work with young Ukrainians.

It is about their recruitment for the purpose of conducting sabotage both in Ukraine and in the EU. Such people are considered "convenient targets" because they can move relatively freely around Europe, and in case of failure or detention, they can be used for propaganda purposes, including to undermine Western support for Ukraine.

As noted in the material, in some cases, the Ukrainian security services have recorded points on the border with Belarus, where Ukrainian citizens met with their handlers. Monitoring of these sites, according to the Ukrainian source, has already led to several detentions of young people suspected of links with the KGB.

But crossing the border, the authors emphasize, is not the main mechanism of recruitment. In most cases, contact is established remotely - via the Internet and messengers, primarily Telegram. At the same time, Belarus is already considered by Western intelligence agencies as a transit territory for operatives arriving from Russia and heading to the EU countries.

As an example, Intelligence Online mentions the case of Maksim Dvirnik - a citizen of Ukraine, detained in June 2024 in France. He traveled to Europe via Belarus and Poland, and was later arrested after a homemade bomb exploded in his hotel.

The involvement of the Belarusian KGB in sabotage operations against Europe remains a sensitive topic for Western intelligence services. The publication notes that the figure of Ivan Tertel, who is considered as one of the contact persons in the broader context of the Russian-Ukrainian war, attracts special attention.

Reminder that the head of the Belarusian KGB is often present at the talks with the U.S. side, where the lifting of sanctions against Belarus and the release of political prisoners are discussed. He is already called the second most important speaker in the country on foreign policy issues.
