Expert's Analysis.
The situation around Greenland and Europe's confrontation with US President Donald Trump may seriously affect Ukraine's place on the agenda at the World Economic Forum (WEF), which is taking place in Davos. This opinion was expressed by said the president of the Ukrainian Analytical Center "Politika" Oleh Lisny.
According to him, the Ukrainian delegation now faces a super task - not to let the discussion of the war in Ukraine be pushed to the background.
- The current WEF in Davos brought expectedly negative moments for us. Europe is primarily focused on the confrontation with America in the person of Trump, and we, at best, are relegated to the second place. We now have a super task to push through the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine and assistance in the energy sector. All the more so because, most likely, our partners are ready for this challenge. Most of them realize that this is a real genocide against the people of Ukraine. This is a desire to bring the Ukrainian people to their knees and force the authorities to capitulate," the political scientist says.
At the moment, Ukraine's allies are not a monolithic bloc that could jointly confront Russian aggression. As Lysnyy notes, even on the issue of punishing Russia for inciting the war, Ukraine's partners do not have a unified opinion.
- If we consider all our partners, there is no unified desire to punish Russia and no understanding of how to do it. Europeans for the most part have an understanding that evil, which has not been punished, becomes stronger and returns. There are historical facts of this, and for Europe it is almost an axiom. But, for example, for our American partners, the very fact that Russia needs to be punished is absent. Moreover, future cooperation in certain spheres is considered, but punishment is not. Ukraine is doing the right thing that on every international platform, even on the economic one, raises the issues of legal punishment of the Russian Federation," the expert believes.
As for Russia, Lysnyy is sure that now the Kremlin will try not to make any sudden moves on the diplomatic field.
-Russians do not want to break anything, they want everything to remain as it is. That is, to stop the situation and wait until the winter is over. Because the Kremlin has high hopes for winter. I hope they will not be justified," he believes.
The most important thing during the discussions in Davos, in addition to the document on security guarantees to Ukraine from the United States, will be an agreement on economic prosperity. The political analyst notes that the importance of both of these documents lies in the fact that they are both related to the end of Russia's war against Ukraine.
- The most important factor of these documents is that they are both related to the end of the war. And the very fact of the necessity of the cessation of hostilities is now taking a back seat. It is wonderful that we and our partners are talking about the future. They see us as a country that has not disappeared from the face of the earth, that it needs help, that it needs guarantees, but the fundamental point is lame, because there are red lines that Ukraine is not ready to cross. Russia is not going to make any concessions in the current situation, - Oleg Lysny emphasizes.
And here again comes the issue of Greenland, the topic of which may overshadow even the war in Ukraine and all the agreements to end it.
- It would be very desirable that the Greenland issue does not affect Trump and that we still finalize at least the document on economic prosperity. Then the signing of the safeguards document could also take place in a few days. Let's remember that Trump recently said that the United States is ready to give guarantees because the American leader is sure that Putin will not attack a second time," Lysny said.
