European ports to be closed to ships carrying Russian oil, gas and coal?
The European Union is working on the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, which is planned to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine - February 24. This is reported by Euractiv with reference to diplomatic sources.
One of the key initiatives was the proposal of Finland and Sweden to completely close European port infrastructure for Russian energy carriers. It is about banning any services for ships carrying Russian oil, gas or coal - from transportation and transshipment to insurance and repair in EU ports. This was announced by Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard.
In addition, a tightening of trade restrictions is being discussed: reducing quotas on imports of Russian fertilizers and increasing customs duties on all goods and services coming from Russia. Also on the agenda is a complete ban on exports of luxury goods.
According to Stenergard, supplies of luxury goods do not play a significant role for the Russian military economy, but are crucial in terms of values. "It is unacceptable that a country that systematically violates European principles continues to benefit from exclusive goods from the EU," she said.
Formally, exports of luxury goods worth more than 300 euros to Russia have been banned since 2022. Nevertheless, as Euractiv points out, the products of many Western brands - such as Gucci, Bottega Veneta and Yves Saint Laurent - still reach the Russian market via third countries, including China and Turkey, with a noticeable markup.
