Discontent in Moscow is growing.
Ukrainian forces are advancing deeper into Russia’s Belgorod region, despite Kremlin claims of repelling the attack. This is a new "silent invasion," writes The Telegraph.
In western Russia, near the fortified border with Ukraine, the rumble of armored vehicles was heard as they crossed minefields and barricades. A column of tanks and combat vehicles paved the way through obstacles, marking a new phase of hostilities.
It remains unclear whether this is a short raid or a long-term operation. The Institute for the Study of War reports battles in the villages of Demidovka, Prilesye, and Popovka. Ukraine is also carrying out precision strikes on command posts, bridges, and supply depots.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that "strategic steps" are being taken to counter a potential Russian offensive on Sumy. The advance of Ukrainian troops into Belgorod will likely divert enemy forces from that direction.
Belgorod region borders Ukraine’s Sumy, Kharkiv, and Luhansk regions and has been used by Russian forces for attacks. Additionally, the region is near Kursk, where fighting for high ground continues and may be significant for future negotiations.
Unlike in Kursk, this time Russian troops were better prepared.
"Russia seems to have been better prepared for this operation," said John Hardie, deputy director of the Russia Program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. "And this operation is significantly smaller in scale and objectives."
According to his estimates, Ukrainian forces number less than a battalion, approximately 500 soldiers. Discontent in Moscow is growing.
"How did this happen? Russian troops completely... They just surrendered. They just left. After that, the enemy occupied the area," said Russian military correspondent Vladimir Romanov, commenting on the loss of Demidovka.
Elite Ukrainian units and American Bradley fighting vehicles are involved in the battles. Pro-Kremlin military blogger Rybar reported on fighting in Demidovka:
"The enemy has repeatedly tried to penetrate our strongholds through the border. The situation remains tense."
Another Russian Telegram channel, Two Majors, claims that Ukraine is "stretching" Russian forces along the front, intensifying attacks.
