'Putin’s friends' have reached an agreement without the Kremlin.
Turkey and Turkmenistan have signed an agreement to simplify the supply of Turkmen natural gas to Turkey, New Voice reports.
This was an important step in energy cooperation between the two countries, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said on February 11. According to him, the deal between the Turkish state pipeline operator BOTAS and the Turkmen company Turkmengaz is aimed at starting gas supplies on March 1.
Turkey consumes more than 50 billion cubic meters of gas per year. It relies on pipeline gas supplies from Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran, as well as LNG imports from various suppliers.
“With this agreement, which we have been working on for many years, we will further advance the strategic cooperation between the two countries, while strengthening the security of natural gas supplies to our country and the region,” Bayraktar said.
He previously stated that Turkey could purchase up to two billion cubic meters of gas per year from Turkmenistan, with the gas expected to be transported through Iran's existing gas network.
Specific data on the volumes of gas to be supplied under the new agreement and the exact terms of transit through Iran have not been disclosed.
