The US President has mentioned ‘very good personal relationships’.
US President Donald Trump has said he spoke to Chinese leader Xi Jinping after his inauguration on 20 January, amid a looming trade war between the two countries. However, he did not specify when exactly this conversation took place.
CNN and CNN и Bloomberg reported that.
‘Yes, I talked to him, and I talked to his people too. His people come all the time. We have very good personal relationships,‘ Trump said in a Fox News interview recorded last week but released on Monday.
Bloomberg writes that the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The publication reminded that the US and Chinese leaders spoke on 17 January, days before Trump's inauguration. Then they discussed trade, TikTok and fentanyl, as well as Ukraine and Israel's war with Hamas.
It should be noted that after his inauguration, Trump threatened and then followed through on his promise to impose 10% duties on all imports from China. China responded to the 10% tariffs with a series of import duties on US goods, including a 15% border tax on imports of coal and liquefied natural gas. Beijing also imposed a 10% duty on crude oil, agricultural machinery and large-engine vehicles. These duties went into effect on Monday.
CNN in turn writes that Trump said he was in no ‘hurry’ to talk to Xi on the same day the administration imposed 10 per cent duties on Chinese imports.
