There's A Water Shortage In Tehran

Residents of Iran's capital have been warned of possible evacuations.

The drought in Iran has reached catastrophic proportions: if it doesn't rain by the end of the month, the authorities promise to impose rationing, and if not longer - to evacuate Tehran.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said this on November 7, reports Bild.

The main source of drinking water for Tehran, the Amir-Kabir reservoir, "contains only 14 million cubic meters of water, eight percent of its capacity," said Behzad Parsa, who is responsible for Tehran's water supply. At that level, the city will only be able to supply itself with water "for two weeks," he warned.

The city of Tehran is home to more than 10 million people and uses about 3 million cubic meters of water daily. As a cost-saving measure, water supply has reportedly been temporarily cut off in several neighborhoods in Tehran in recent days; outages have also occurred during the summer.

It could be worse

The Center for Middle East and Global Order Studies (CMEG) concludes in its latest Iran and Regional (In-)Stability & Security Briefing (IRIS) analysis that Iran's water crisis encompasses not only reservoirs, but also "the country's deteriorating wetlands and depleted underground aquifers."

In addition, there are no signs that "the Iranian leadership intends to change its course" and engage in infrastructure investment, so the situation, according to the experts' assessment, "will continue to deteriorate."

The report emphasizes that previously, "the environmental crisis has often been the cause of political protests against the regime and its authorities." Therefore, the water situation will probably have political repercussions as well.
