The man is awaiting trial.
A resident of Vitebsk will be tried for killing a brown bear in Beshenkovichi district, reported in the information service of the Prosecutor's Office of Vitebsk region.
Hunting this animal is prohibited, which is provided by the relevant regulations of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Decree № 112 "On hunting and hunting economy".
The animal is officially recognized as a rare species in Belarus and is included in the Red Book.
Unlawful hunting and extraction of a brown bear, causing damage on a particularly large scale, is incriminated against a 29-year-old Vitebsk resident.
The wild animal was shot in May 2025 in a forest area near the village of Vysokaya Gora from a registered carbine with a thermal imaging scope.
The carcass of the animal was discovered by local residents. They reported about the find, thanks to which law enforcers were able to quickly get on the trail of a possible poacher.
Environmental damage was caused on a particularly large scale. It was estimated at Br43,500.
The sum includes Br42,000 for environmental damage and the cost of the illegally harvested bear - Br1500.
The Prosecutor's Office concluded that the charges were justified. The criminal case was sent to court.
The prosecutor left the measure of restraint chosen earlier against the hunter unchanged - bail.
