London dispatched a Royal Navy frigate and airplanes.
The Russian reconnaissance ship Yantar has entered British waters for the second time this year, and the British Navy has prepared to give it an armed response if necessary. In addition, laser beams were directed from the Yantar at British fighter jets, Defense Minister John Healey said, calling such actions "extremely dangerous," writes Politico.
Healey confirmed that the Yantar entered the UK's exclusive economic zone for the second time this year (the first incident occurred in January); the area extends 45 miles from the coastline.
The spy ship is now near the edge of territorial waters (12 miles from the coast), which are already subject to state sovereignty.
The UK has sent a Royal Navy frigate and aircraft to monitor the vessel, which is "designed to gather intelligence and map our undersea cables," Healey said. "Amber" was designed to "jeopardize and endanger our submarine infrastructure and that of our allies," with "capabilities that enable surveillance in peacetime and sabotage in conflict," the minister added. He said the Navy has changed the rules of engagement to allow for closer surveillance of the Yantar and has prepared options for military action in case the vessel changes course.
- My message to Russia and Putin is this: we see you. We know what you are doing. And if the Amber heads south this week, we will be ready.
He also said that the Amber had for the first time directed laser beams at the Royal Air Force planes accompanying it. "Anything that interferes with, distracts or puts at risk pilots operating British warplanes is extremely dangerous," he said.
