Hoping to restart negotiations with the Russian Federation.
US President Donald Trump has sent a high-level delegation from the Ministry of War to Kiev. The goal is to resume talks with Russia on ending the war.
This is reported by The Wall Street Journal.
The publication writes, citing senior US officials, that such a move is the latest attempt by the Trump administration to resume talks on ending the war in Ukraine.
Who will go to Kiev?"
WSJ notes that U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll along with two four-star generals were to hold talks with President Vladimir Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials, as well as senior officials and industry representatives.
It is also known that Driscoll plans to meet with Russian officials as well, but at a later date.
"The White House's decision to reach out to Driscoll and senior officials stems in part from a belief that Moscow might be more open to military-mediated talks, as well as frustration that numerous previous attempts have yielded little," the publication writes.
A senior Trump administration official said that Secretary Driscoll is traveling to Ukraine to familiarize himself with the facts on the ground. He is expected to attend meetings and report his findings to the White House.
"The president has made it clear that it is time to stop the killing and make an agreement to end the war," the unnamed U.S. official said.
Driscoll's mission is to restart peace talks on Trump's behalf, another official said.
