Lithuania Urged The EU To Toughen Sanctions Against Lukashenko's Regime

Because of hybrid attacks.

Lithuania at the meeting of the EU General Affairs Council on November 17 raised the issue of hybrid attacks by Belarus and called for strengthening sanctions against the Belarusian regime.

This was stated by Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Sigita Mitkus, who was quoted by the press service of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, reports "European Pravda".

In the course of the meeting, he emphasized that violation of Lithuanian airspace by smuggled balloons launched from the territory of Belarus should be regarded as a conscious hybrid operation.

"We call for clearly calling the actions of the Belarusian regime a hybrid attack against an EU member state and considering new sanctions against responsible Belarusian officials and institutions," the deputy minister said.

He emphasized that Belarus should immediately allow EU-registered trucks to return to the EU territory.

"Belarus' actions are unacceptable, they discriminate against EU enterprises and lead to additional financial losses," summarized Mitkus.

Because of the use of weather balloons to transport smuggled cigarettes launched from Belarus, Lithuania has been forced to stop the work of airports several times.

The country's leadership calls it a hybrid attack of Belarus. Such actions of Minsk were condemned by the EU leaders, while NATO expressed its support to Lithuania.
