But there's a nuance.
US President Donald Trump is willing to sign a bill on sanctions against Russian Federation, but on the condition that he retains the power to make the final decision on the measures, Reuters reported.
"He will sign it. He made that known last night," a senior White House official said.
The official added that the White House would insist on specific language that would ensure Trump retains control of the sanctions.
"It's always been important to the White House and the president that there be a provision in the sanctions package that guarantees the president the final decision-making authority on sanctions. So if that is included, I think the president will consider signing the bill," the official explained.
November 16, Trump told reporters before flying from Florida to the White House that Republicans were working on a bill that would impose sanctions on any country doing business with Russia.
He specified that Iran could also be included in that list.
The secondary sanctions bill against Russia, authored by Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal, was introduced in the spring of 2025. It calls for 500% duties on imports from countries that buy Russian oil, natural gas or uranium.
