Germany Will Increase Its Army

Volunteers will be paid €2,600 per month.

German authorities have agreed on a new military service plan in preparation for a possible armed conflict with Russia. German publication Der Spiegel writes about it.

The plan was developed with the participation of the ruling parties - CDU/CSU and SPD, which agreed on steps to increase the size of the country's armed forces.

The new model stipulates that military service will remain voluntary, but the government will be given tools to account for serviceable young men.

"We must be prepared for all possible scenarios and our defense capability must be unquestionable," a German government spokesman said, commenting on the adopted plan.

The main provisions of the program:

All 18-year-olds will fill out a questionnaire about their suitability and willingness to serve;

women will be able to do so voluntarily;

males born after January 1, 2008 will undergo a mandatory medical examination;

military service will remain voluntary, but parliament may introduce conscription in case of a shortage of volunteers;

the government is offering a monthly salary of €2600;

after a year of service, volunteers will receive a subsidy for a driver's license.

According to the plan, the German government aims to increase the size of the army from the current 182,000 to 270,000 military personnel.

The move is part of a broader program to modernize the armed forces, which includes increasing defense spending and developing the country's mobilization resources.
