The Premier of Victoria has signed a formal agreement with Indigenous peoples.
Prime Minister of the Australian state of Victoria Jacinta Allan for the first time in the history of the country signed a formal agreement with the indigenous peoples who inhabited the continent before the arrival of colonists. This is reported by Bloomberg.
"Today we recognize that the ancient legal systems and modern institutions of our democracy can exist side by side," Allan stressed.
The 34-page treaty formally acknowledges the damage caused by colonization and establishes a new representative body to protect the rights of indigenous peoples, the agency said. As noted, in more than two centuries since British colonizers arrived on the continent, no Australian government has reached a formal agreement with the country's indigenous peoples, although states such as Canada and New Zealand have already concluded similar agreements.
At the same time, a referendum held in 2023 rejected Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's proposal to establish an indigenous advisory body in the constitution.
