CBS: Trump Has Been Presented With Plans For Possible Operations In Venezuela With Land Strikes

Are the days of "Lukashenko's friend" numbered?

Senior military officials on Nov. 13 presented U.S. President Donald Trump with updated options for possible operations in Venezuela, including land strikes, sources told CBS News familiar with the White House meetings.

The Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, Joint Chiefs of Staff chief Gen. Dan Kaine and other senior officials briefed Trump on military plans in the coming days, they said. However, two of the TV station's interlocutors said a final decision had not yet been made.

A Pentagon spokesman declined to comment to CBS, and White House officials did not respond to a request by the time of publication.

The TV station's sources told the station that the U.S. intelligence community was involved in providing information for possible operations. However, National Intelligence Chief Tulsi Gabbard was not present at the White House discussions because she was returning from an overseas trip, CBS noted. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was at a summit of G7 foreign ministers.

The day before, the largest U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, entered Southern Command's area of responsibility covering Latin America and the Caribbean, joining eight other U.S. Navy ships in the region. More than four thousand troops are aboard the carrier, along with attack fighter and attack helicopter squadrons with dozens of tactical aircraft.

The US military has been striking maritime targets in Venezuela since September. US authorities say their actions are aimed at combating drug trafficking. As reported by the Miami Herald, the White House administration approved the strikes on military targets in Venezuela.
