A strange "version" of the Budapest summit disruption has been voiced.
Russia is still "ready for the summit in Budapest". Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said this in an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, excerpts of which were published by the Russian news agency TASS.
"We count on common sense and on the fact that Washington will refrain from actions that could escalate the conflict to a new level," Lavrov said.
Moreover, Lavrov cited "the reason" why the summit in Budapest was abruptly canceled after his conversation with Secretary of State Mark Rubio.
"Trump received 'underhand reports' after which the summit with Russia in Budapest was not held," he said.
The American president, Lavrov said, supports the idea of an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine with the fixing of forces at current positions. Moscow, however, insists that Kiev cede additional territory.
The Russian foreign minister also had harsh words for Europe, accusing it of "derailing peace initiatives."
These comments by Lavrov were initially part of an interview with the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera. However, according to Reuters, the Italian newspaper refused to publish the interview.
