Trump signed legislation to reauthorize funding for the government.
U.S. President Donald Trump signed the law on funding the government. Thus the longest shutdown in US history has come to an end.
The CNN reports that.
Trump signed the law a few hours after it was passed by the House of Representatives of the US Congress. Two days earlier, the bill was supported by the Senate.
The 222 members of the House of Representatives, mostly Republicans but also a few Democrats, voted in favor of reopening the US government. 209 congressmen were opposed.
The bill passed is a compromise bill because it provides temporary funding for the government - until January 30, 2026.
It also fixes three annual appropriations packages:
for military construction;
for the needs of the legislature;
the Department of Agriculture.
The bill guarantees reinstatement of workers laid off during the shutdown with back pay.
The aftermath of the record shutdown for the US
This shutdown was the longest in US history, lasting 43 days.
It broke the previous record, which was also recorded during Trump's cadence: in early 2019, funding for the government was frozen for 35 days.
The current shutdown began Oct. 1 after Democrats and Republicans failed to approve a federal budget due to differing views on health benefits for Americans. Democrats insisted on continuing the benefits, while their opponents were against it.
Economists estimated the daily loss from the shutdown to the U.S. economy to be about $15 billion.
Budget constraints were felt by many federal agencies, including the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), which was forced to furlough about 1,400 employees.
