To compete with the US and Asia.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz took the initiative to create a pan-European stock exchange to strengthen the position of EU companies in the face of increased rivalry with American and Asian competitors. This is reported by Bloomberg.
Merz emphasized that European businesses need "a sufficiently large and developed capital market" to quickly attract the investment needed for growth. He lamented that technology companies like BioNTech prefer to go public in New York rather than in Europe.
The chancellor referred to reports by former Italian prime ministers Mario Draghi and Enrico Letta, which also emphasized the need for urgent measures to boost the competitiveness and productivity of European companies.
"It is a question of our future and whether Europe will remain a player in the global economy or become a toy in the hands of the big centers in Asia and America," the chancellor said.
