The European Parliament has nominated political prisoner journalist Andrzej Poczobut, sentenced to eight years in prison, for the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, writes Radio Svaboda.

Members of the Foreign Affairs and Development Committees of the European Parliament voted for the finalists of the award, which included Andrzej Poczobut along with journalist Mzia Amaglabeli from Georgia, who was sentenced to two years in prison by the Batumi court in August 2025.

Andrzej Poczobut, a journalist and leader of the Union of Poles of Belarus, liquidated by the authorities, was detained in 2021. In February 2023, he was sentenced to eight years in prison on articles of incitement of hostility and calls for actions against national security (Articles 130 and 361 of the Criminal Code).
