The U.S. president's position has changed dramatically.
Relations between Kiev and Washington have been warming since Ukraine realized that there can only be "one virgin in the room" - meaning the focus will always be Donald Trump. Ukrainian officials are showing a new confidence - and it's all thanks to the US president, writes Politico.
In a speech before the Knesset, Trump said his efforts are focused on ending the war between Ukraine and Russia. "First we have to end Russia," he said.
Last month, Trump actually called Russia an "aggressor," changing the tone of his rhetoric regarding the conflict.
The gradual rapprochement between Trump and Vladimir Zelensky began after a series of tense meetings in February and August, including Trump's controversial meeting with Putin in Alaska, which drew criticism in the United States and Europe. At the time, Ukrainian and European leaders watched as Trump applauded the Russian president, but now positions have changed.
Thanks to Zelensky's diplomatic efforts and the support of allies - notably British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles - Trump has begun to view Ukraine more favorably. This was evident at the UN General Assembly, where he praised the Ukrainian leader as a "brave man" and said Ukraine could regain lost territory.
