The ceremony took place in the newly renovated White House Rose Garden.

The award was received by Charlie Kirk's widow Erica.

At the ceremony, Trump called Kirk a "fearless freedom fighter," a "leader who inspired the next generation" and an American patriot.

The US president said he "rushed halfway around the world" from the Middle East to present the award on Charlie Kirk's birthday. He said he was initially going to call his widow to ask her to postpone the ceremony, but he "didn't have the courage" to do so.
