Transnistria Rejects Only Way Out Of Energy Crisis

Moldova has named the reason.

The Moldovan authorities believe that the left bank of the Dniester (Transnistria) still hopes for free gas from Russia and therefore refuses to buy it on the exchange, despite the critical state of the energy sector.

This statement was made by Moldovan Energy Minister Konstantin Borosan and acting head of Moldovagaz Vadim Ceban, NewsMaker reports.

Representatives of Moldova back in December suggested that Transnistria consider the possibility of purchasing on the Romanian exchange.

“We have not yet received any response to these proposals,” the publication quotes Borosan as saying.

According to Ceban, Transnistria justifies its refusal by saying that it expects Gazprom to resume supplies.

“They […] recommend that we continue negotiations with Gazprom. I think they should understand that if Gazprom supplies do not resume, the only solution will be to buy gas on the exchanges, for which they will have to pay. There is no other way out,” he said on air at Pro TV.

At the same time, according to Borosan, in Transnistria, after the cessation of Russian gas supplies, despite attempts to save, the electricity deficit already amounts to about 30% of the required consumption.

“The load reaches 219 MW, and the maximum production of the Moldavskaya GRES and Dubossary HPP is only 154 MW. This electricity deficit on the left bank of the Dniester is managed by disconnecting consumers, street lighting, water supply systems, industrial zones, agricultural processing plants, etc. If enough consumers are not disconnected, there is a risk of a complete failure of the system, because the distribution networks on the left bank are overloaded,” he warned.

It was previously reported that after Ukraine stopped the transit of Russian gas, central heating and hot water supply were turned off in Transnistria due to the lack of gas supplies. According to the “authorities”, gas reserves in Transnistria will run out within this month.

Electricity supplies from the Moldavian State District Power Plant to the unrecognized Transnistria have been completely stopped. The station has been converted to coal and generates electricity only for household consumers and life support enterprises of Transnistria. The volume of electricity produced in Moldova is sent only to the domestic market. Export is possible only on weekends and holidays, at other times there is a ban.

Public and commercial buildings have reduced interior lighting by at least 30% where technically possible. Complete shutdown of lights in rooms not involved in the work process has become mandatory.
