They enabled the successful attack in Kursk region.
Russian sources have expressed concern about the ability of the Russian army's military to respond to Ukraine's ongoing all-army efforts to integrate electronic warfare (EW) capabilities. In particular, the ability of Ukrainian forces to conduct long-range strikes alongside ground operations.
Propagandists got panicked about this on January 5, when the AFU attacked Russian forces in several directions in Kursk region of the Russian Federation. This is reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW)
Several Russian pro-war bloggers said that EW interference created by the Ukrainian military during offensives in the Kursk region prevented Russian forces from using drones in the area. This ‘impaired the ability of Russian forces to defend themselves’ against Ukrainian mechanised attacks.
One propagandist stated that some of the few Russian drone options that consistently counter Ukrainian EW measures are UAVs with fibre optic cables. Although some of his colleagues claimed the Russian Armed Forces were allegedly able to use FPV drones and ‘Lancets’ for this purpose as well.
Officials in Russian Federation said on January 5 their military allegedly ‘shot down three’ Ukrainian drones over Kursk region.
‘This suggests that the AFU may be attempting to integrate long-range strike capabilities with ground operations and tactical EW systems’, ISW noted.
A Russian blogger claimed that Ukrainian forces carried out HIMARS strikes near Bolshoye Soldatskoye and other unspecified areas of Kursk region to prevent Russian forces from deploying reinforcements, artillery systems and UAV operator units.
According to analysts, such widespread aggressor's concerns about the ability of Russian forces to respond to improved Ukrainian EW technology and long-range strike capabilities indicate that the Russian army may have difficulty quickly adapting to Ukrainian innovations on the battlefield.
‘Reports that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are using long-range fire to overrun Russian rear areas and EW to reduce the effectiveness of Russian drones in support of their mechanised offensives indicate that Ukrainian forces operating in Kursk region are employing more effective combined arms tactics,’ ISW stated.
